Get Out and Get Moving with your Prosthesis!

Outdoor activities provide great health benefits regardless of your age, gender, and capabilities. Aside from fresh air and enjoying nature, being outdoors provides you with many activities. It doesn’t matter whether you want to learn a new hobby or get back to an active lifestyle, outdoor recreation offers a multitude of physical activities that can be done on your own or with family and friends.

Using Prosthetic Device for Outdoor Activities

Anyone can get into any outdoor activity, even those who have lost a limb as a result of disease or injury. There are prosthetic devices that are built specifically for those looking to maintain an active lifestyle. Check with your Prosthetist before starting a new activity to make sure your prosthesis is appropriate for that activity. Using a prosthetic devise that isn’t specially designed to cope with the stresses of a particular activity may actually damage your prosthesis or cause serious injury to your body.

There are different types of prostheses available. The most common are those for the lower leg and foot, leg with knee, and arm and hand. But with the advancements in medical knowledge and technology, there are now prosthetic devices that can be customized to suit one’s lifestyle. These are activity specific prosthetic devices. These prostheses can be used for a wide range of outdoor recreation including golf, running, and swimming.

Golf

Golf is a good choice of recreation if you’re looking for a low-impact activity. People with prosthesis will be needing an additional component in their device in order to play the sport well. This device is the tibia rotator which helps in rotating the prosthetic leg while keeping the foot planted.

Running

Running is a good form of aerobic exercise, although it can put a great deal of pressure on the residual limb. However, by opting for a high-performance running prosthesis, you can do this activity really well with practice.

Swimming

If you love water activities like swimming, there are swimming leg prostheses that come with a hollow plastic shell with holes. These holes let the water in while you swim and drain it once you’re done.
