Is It Time for a New Prosthesis? Here’s How to Know

Living with a prosthesis can be life-changing, restoring mobility, confidence, and independence. But just like any piece of medical equipment, your prosthesis needs regular attention and may eventually need to be replaced or adjusted. At Premier Surgical Prosthetic Center in Knoxville, TN our goal is to help you stay comfortable, active, and supported with the best possible fit.
Here are some common signs that it may be time for a new prosthesis, or at least a professional check-up.
Unusual Sounds
If you hear squeaking, clicking, popping, or grinding when you walk, your prosthesis may have worn parts or mechanical issues. Don’t ignore these noises—they’re early warning signs that something needs attention.
Discomfort or Skin Irritation
Your prosthesis should feel secure—not painful. If you’re experiencing burning, itching, pressure, or rubbing, or if your socket just doesn’t feel right anymore, it could be a sign of poor fit. Discomfort can lead to skin breakdown and reduced mobility, so it’s best to address it quickly.
Skin Changes or Wounds
Persistent blisters, sores, rashes, or redness, especially those that don’t fade after removing the prosthesis, are signs of trouble. These issues may point to an improper fit or a reaction to the liner or socket materials.
Too Many Socks?
Wearing more than 10-ply of prosthetic socks regularly just to get a snug fit is a red flag. Your residual limb changes over time, and excessive sock use can lead to poor alignment and discomfort.
Poor Limb Contact
If your residual limb isn’t making full contact at the bottom of the socket (called incomplete distal contact), it can reduce stability and cause pain. This often happens due to limb volume changes or socket wear.
Major Weight Changes
Gaining or losing more than 20 pounds can significantly affect your prosthetic fit. When your limb changes shape or size, your socket must adapt, too.
Mobility or Balance Problems
Still struggling with balance, step length, or stability despite physical therapy? Your prosthesis might be the issue. A proper fit and alignment are key to safe and confident movement.
Pain, Fatigue, or Activity Limits
If you’re avoiding certain activities, feeling more tired than usual, or experiencing pain while using your prosthesis, it’s time to reassess. These symptoms often signal that your device is no longer working as it should.
Time for a Check-Up?
Consider scheduling a consultation if:
- You’ve been using the same shrinker or liner for over six months
- It’s been more than a year since your last prosthetic evaluation
- You’ve had the same knee or foot shell for over three years
Take the Next Step
If you’re experiencing any of these issues, don’t wait. The right prosthesis should support your lifestyle—not limit it.
